September 3, 2016 is the Global Day of solidarity with ILMI UMEROV - the 59-year-old deputy chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis, who is being prosecuted by the Russian occupation authorities in the Crimea for his remarks in support of Ukraine's territorial integrity and for speaking out against Russian occupation.
Over the last two weeks, the so-called "new authorities" of the Crimea applied a range of punitive psychiatric measures against him, imprisoning him and creating a real threat to his life. Ilmi is completely mentally healthy person, but has some other chronic human diseases, including diabetes.
His condition deteriorates rapidly and significantly. He is denied by the Russian occupation authorities of treatment necessary for diabetes patients. The administration of the psychiatric ward creates obstacles for visits of Umerov's lawyer and relatives. This treatment and attitude is equal to torture.
This Saturday, 3 September 2016, we urge all people who stand for justice, freedom, and human dignity around the world to manifest solidarity and express protest against the tyranny and barbarism of the Russian occupation authorities in the Crimea and tell them out loud: STOP KILLING ILMI UMEROV! STOP TERROR AGAINST THE CRIMEAN TATARS!
We ask governments, international institutions and civil society organizations to increase pressure on the Kremlin to end groundless prosecutions of the Crimean Tatars and release Ilmi Umerov.
