As part of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the United Kingdom, Minister for Foreign Affaire of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha met with Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization Arsenio Dominguez.
The Minister thanked the IMO Secretary-General for his continued attention to Ukraine and the Organization’s consistent engagement in addressing maritime issues of critical importance to our state.
Andrii Sybiha expressed appreciation for the condolences conveyed following Russia’s 6 June attacks against clearly marked Ukrainian search-and-rescue boats and commercial vessels.
The parties discussed the deteriorating maritime security situation, including Russia’s ongoing attacks against Ukrainian ports, civilian shipping, and search-and-rescue vessels. They also underscored the importance of safeguarding freedom and security of navigation worldwide.
Particular attention was devoted to practical instruments available within the IMO framework to counter these threats, including Russia’s shadow fleet, fraudulent vessel registration practices, illegal shipping activities, and risks associated with calls at temporarily closed Ukrainian ports.
The Minister stressed the importance of preventing seafarers from being involved in such dangerous and unlawful voyages.
Andrii Sybiha also highlighted the significance of the “IMO for Ukraine” technical assistance project, which has already entered the practical implementation phase and will provide targeted support to strengthen the resilience and security of Ukraine’s maritime sector.
The Foreign Minister invited Secretary-General Dominguez to visit Ukraine again and witness firsthand the consequences of Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports, maritime infrastructure, and civilian shipping.
