On May 8, 2016, as part of the Remembrance and Reconciliation Day, Ukrainian diplomats honoured the memory of the victims of the World War II by laying wreaths and flowers to the Soviet War Memorial in London.
Representatives of the Georgian and the Moldovan Embassy in the UK and Honorary Secretary of the Soviet Memorial Trust Fund Ralph Gibson joined the wreath laying ceremony at the Soviet War Memorial.
The Ambassador of Ukraine HE Natalia Galibarenko in her speech paid tribute to the great sacrifice of the Ukrainian people who died in World War II. She also stressed that it is unacceptable forKremlin to speculate with historical facts that diminish the role of the Ukrainians and other peoples of the former USSR in the pursuit of victory over Nazism.
Tribute to the memory of all victims of World War II is paid worldwide. United Nations General Assembly in its resolution of 2004 declared 8 and 9 May as Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation. May the 8th is celebrated as a Day of Victory in Europe in memory of May 8, 1945, the date when the anti-Hitler coalition formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi forces.
By the Presidential Decree Ukraine joins European countries in the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation.
